Commercials

Never thought I would have to blog about commercials. Honestly I forgot all about commercials because now with the DVR technology you can just skip commercials. I always have hated commercials and have never really paid much attention to them. I usually just do something else until the TV show I was watching comes back on. However now that I had to pay attention to the commercials I was watching, I never realized how much the commercials relate to the program you are watching. The first television program I watched was A&E and the show was Storage Wars. I would say over 75% of the commercials were all A&E shows, such as Billy the Exterminator, Storage wars Texas, Dog the bounty Hunter, Shipping Wars, Break Out kings, and a few other A&E shows. In all of these commercials it would promote the show by showing a quick interesting clip of the show, to make the audience say wow that looks pretty neat, I might want to check that out. Then at the end of the commercial it would give you the date and time of when the show would be on. These commercial make perfect sense for A&E because it is promoting the people watching their current show to comeback and watch more A&E shows. So the commercials that A&E are showing are intended for people who are already A&E fans it would seem. A&E also showed a few commercials about Restaurants and Insurances companies, which I am assuming, is intended for the older audience.

Now the second show I watched for and Hour was ESPN. I was shocked on how related all the commercials were to the ESPN program. All the commercials shown were intended for and older male audience or for sports fans in general. They had commercials advertising sporting events, sporting goods, and a lot of commercials involving men products like weight loss and style. There was two specific commercial that I thought went great together. The first was advertising a product to called Insta Slim T-shirt, which is used to make men look thinner instantly. Then the next commercial after that was a weight loss program called the Nutrisystem Diet. Not only was it a special weight loss program for men, but also it was being endorsed by Dan Marino a Hall of Fame Quarterback who is a huge well-known sports icon. I thought these two commercials fit so well together and to the ESPN program because they were both intended for older males and both were about making males look better. Also the fact that the Nutrisystem was endorsed by a sports figure and the ESPN show is all about sports I though it was a perfect fit. So overall I thought ESPN did a great job with their commercials and nailing their intended audience of older males and sports fans.   (476)

  1. Hey, I think I watched TV at the exact same time you did on the exact same channel.

  2. Really nice observations, Max!

It is interesting to note how one channel uses the airtime to promote it's own shows while the other fills it with ads affiliated companies. Was there any commercials for women's weight-loss or sports at all? Or was it exclusively for adult men?
